Discover Alta Via

Alta Via is a charming dining destination located in the heart of Pittsburgh's PPG Place. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it offers an exceptional experience that combines fresh, vibrant ingredients with a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. Known for its modern take on classic Italian cuisine, Alta Via promises a memorable dining experience with a menu full of hearty flavors and imaginative twists.

One of the standout features of Alta Via is its dedication to using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. From fresh pasta to seasonal vegetables, everything is prepared with a focus on quality and taste. The restaurant’s menu highlights the best of Italian cuisine, featuring a variety of pastas, pizzas, and delectable small plates that showcase bold flavors and expertly balanced ingredients. Each dish is crafted with attention to detail, ensuring that guests can enjoy the authenticity of Italian dining in the heart of Pittsburgh.

For those craving something light and fresh, the appetizers at Alta Via are sure to impress. The bruschetta, for example, is a delightful mix of vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh basil, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze, served on perfectly toasted bread. Another favorite is the carpaccio, which is thinly sliced raw beef topped with arugula, capers, and a hint of lemon-simple yet exquisite.

The pizza offerings at Alta Via are nothing short of extraordinary. The crust is thin, crispy, and cooked to perfection in a wood-fired oven, giving it that irresistible smokiness that is a hallmark of traditional Italian pizza. Whether you prefer classic margherita or something with a bit more flair, like the “quattro formaggi” pizza with a blend of cheeses, the pizza selection never disappoints. It's the kind of pizza that makes you appreciate the simplicity of a well-cooked pie.

For the main courses, Alta Via offers a diverse selection that caters to a wide range of tastes. The signature pasta dishes, like the pappardelle with wild boar ragu or the creamy fettuccine alfredo, are crowd-pleasers. Every bite of these dishes exudes richness and depth, with each ingredient playing a role in the overall flavor profile. The wild boar ragu, in particular, stands out as a flavorful option that takes inspiration from the rustic culinary traditions of Italy’s countryside.

If you’re in the mood for something more substantial, Alta Via also serves a variety of meats and fish. The roasted lamb chops are particularly noteworthy, perfectly seasoned and served with a side of roasted vegetables. The fish options, like the branzino, are always fresh and expertly prepared, making Alta Via a versatile spot for anyone looking to indulge in high-quality Italian cuisine.

Not only does Alta Via excel in its food offerings, but it also offers an impressive beverage menu that complements the cuisine. From local craft beers to an extensive wine list, you’ll find a selection that pairs beautifully with your meal. The wine list, in particular, is curated with Italian wines that elevate the experience, whether you’re enjoying a light white with your pasta or a bold red with your meat course.

The atmosphere at Alta Via further enhances the overall experience. Located in the iconic PPG Place, the restaurant’s modern, sleek design provides a welcoming environment for both casual dinners and special occasions. The large windows let in plenty of natural light, and the open kitchen adds an interactive touch to the dining experience. Whether you’re here for a quick lunch or a leisurely evening meal, the setting feels comfortable yet stylish, offering the perfect backdrop for a memorable dining experience.

Customers rave about their time at Alta Via, with many praising the attentive service, the impeccable food quality, and the overall ambiance. Whether it’s a romantic date, a family gathering, or a business lunch, the restaurant’s inviting atmosphere and delicious menu make it a go-to choice in Pittsburgh.

If you're in Pittsburgh and looking for a dining experience that offers a blend of tradition and modernity, Alta Via is undoubtedly worth a visit. With its exceptional menu, warm ambiance, and top-notch service, it stands as a shining example of Italian dining at its best.

  • I’m not sure about how to rate this restaurant for these next reasons: we ordered pasta which was extremely delicious!!!! The Cesar salad was a little different than other restaurants but good and the tiramisu was fabulous!!!!! The problem was that we had to wait 50 minutes for our food…. I know it was Saturday night but 50 minutes is insane…. Also the bread is literally cold. I think it should be a least warm… the service was good so I’ll give them 4 stars but they to work about timing and the quality of the bread

  • This is the first time that I’ve reviewed any place while still sitting at the bar. Walked in and sat at the bar while out of town for work. I’ll post pictures of everything but the margarita was perfect, refreshing and tart. They brought out bread (warm and extremely soft) with a scoop of butter in oil….flakey salt on top with finely diced garlic and seasoning, it was unreal. Appetizer was the tuna tartare which was ideal before the pasta. Light and fresh with bread that still smelled like the grill it just came off and warm. Last, the bartender recommended the vodka sauce which is one of my favorites to begin with but all I’ll say is that I used the last two pieces of prosciutto as mops to clean up the rest of the sauce in the bowl. Then used my last piece of bread so that it went back clean. I wish I knew the bartender’s name because he was on point as well. Perfect drinks, polite and helpful. Update, I decided to get the tiramisu. Only enhanced the meal. Bartender is Mason

  • Our server, Fiona was a delight! Service was excellent, the ambiance was excellent, and the food was excellent with one small exception. Loved all 4 appetizers we ordered for the table except the ricotta toast with figs. Our suggestion would be chopped figs in a compote or a layer of fig jam and a thinner layer of ricotta. The entire group agreed this was a very difficult appetizer to eat based on the large chunks of fig and the giant layer of ricotta. Our favorite was the mushrooms but also loved the artichokes and parmesean potatoes. We will definitely be back!

  • We had a great time here — I wish I remembered our waiter’s name but he was amazing, so friendly and fun, very helpful when it came to the menu, and even made notes on my mom’s receipt so she could remember the pasta shape she liked so much. The food was awesome, tasted very fresh, and cocktails were also great. Vibe inside was very cool as well. Would 100% return next time I am in town.

  • We had a wonderful experience during the light-up night. Our server, Julia, was exceptional. She was friendly, personable, and provided excellent descriptions of the menu items. Despite it being a very busy evening, we did not have a long wait for our food. The portions were quite generous. The Burrata was good. The Meatballs were quite good. The Brussel sprouts were delicious. The Chicken Parmesan was not to our preference, though it was a very large portion. The Branzino was truly delightful.

  • We were greeted at the door with Extremely friendly staff. We were seated at our table at our reservation time. Our server, Michalena, was amazing! They helped us select the perfect wine. The appetizers we had were the mushrooms and potatoes. Then we tried the soup which was freshly made. My pasta dish with lobster was Awesome! My husband had the rigatoni with meatballs and that was out of this world. We will definitely go back when we were in the city the next time.

  • Great modern italian restaurant in the heart of market square downtown. Amazing service and tasty food. Chicken parm and spaghetti is delicious. Recommend any small plates really. Worth a trip if you want some italian food in the area.
